You would do better to post in the computer section….but a patch is a piece of software that is used to make a fix/improvement to a computer program (in your case a game).

Must be similar to a installer, those files that you use to install a new program or game.
Some old patches are like compresed files and you need to know where to decompress them, but most new patches know where did you install your game and do almost everything for themselves.

Basically you run the patch program (following the provided directions) and it will go to your game folder and modify your installed game files. Once it has completed that job, you will not need it anymore unless for some reason you reinstall the game from your original (unpatched) disk(s)

A patch simply replaces a bad former section of the program. Make a copy of the original program then install the patch. If it doesn’t accomplish what you want, you can always reinstall the original. A patch is computer code addressed to fit in a particular area of the original.
