JumpStart Animal Adventures

Amazon.com Review

When a bat named Batney Ears started singing like Britney Spears, not only were we hooked–we also learned about echolocation. JumpStart: Animal Adventures is a lush mix of entertainment and education that does detailed justice to the wild world of animals.

The program starts with the news that Habitat magazine is looking for kids who love animals to enter a contest. To fill out the four contest-entry forms, kids must explore a temperate forest, an African savanna, a rain forest, and a tide pool to gather animal information, photographs, and points. Each habitat has three screens, with gorgeous graphics and rich, ambient sound. Leafcutter ants, elephants, crabs, and 37 other creatures gladly share information about themselves and their environment. Clicking on certain animals will yield a catchy video (imagine crabs sounding like Green Day as they sing about limb regeneration) and games.

The games, which can be adjusted to three difficulty levels, give this program a seamless feel, adding depth to the educational experience. For example, when kids click on a beaver, the beaver launches into a detailed explanation of why it builds dams. The beaver then invites players to cut trees for a dam, adding that they must be small trees because beavers can’t move larger ones. After the correct trees are gnawed down, kids can complete the dam by fitting the downed trees into a dam-shaped puzzle. After that, they’re invited to gather mud from the riverbank, then help the beaver use his tail to pack the mud into the dam. Your child will play four games, hone spatial and sorting skills, and develop an in-depth understanding of the phrase “busy as a beaver.” And this is just one animal in a program that has dozens of creatures to learn from.

Goal-oriented kids will love relentlessly progressing toward the various rewards the program offers, culminating in a quiz show called “The Animal Smarts Game” that can be played alone, or with a friend. Free-form exploration is also an option. We were impressed with the way JumpStart: Animal Adventures immersed us in exotic environments, and treated games as a teaching tool instead of an afterthought. (Ages 4 and older) –Anne Erickson

Unique Character Moves, Games and Game Levels
Designed to provide a gaming experience to match the spirit of the movie, Up the Video Game for PC/Mac provides a wealth of enticing features including: character-specific moves, unique two-player multiplayer games like Rafting, Balloon collection and Tug-of-war, and 27 levels of gameplay across six environments.

Playable Characters and Storyline

Carl from 'UP' The Video Game Carl
Carl Fredricksen is not your average hero. He’s a retired balloon salesman, who is forced to leave the house he and his wife built together. But instead of moving into an old folks home, Carl takes action. He ties thousands of balloons to the roof, lifts the house into the air and sets off for South America, fulfilling the promise he made to his wife years before. However, Carl’s plan is challenged by the discovery of a stowaway, the optimistic, overly eager Russell. Carl’s journey tests more than his patience when the duo must survive the extreme weather, treacherous terrain, and strange inhabitants of a lost world – as well as each other.
Russell from 'UP' The Video Game Russell
Russell is an enthusiastic and persistent 8-year-old Junior Wilderness Explorer. Armed with a backpack laden with gear, he is ready for the wilderness. The problem is that he’s never actually left the city. All his knowledge of the outdoors comes from books, and his sole camping experience was in his own living room. He’s just one “Assisting the Elderly” badge shy of achieving his lifetime goal: Senior Wilderness Explorer. When he targets Carl Fredricksen as the elder he will assist, Russell ends up as an unwitting stowaway on Carl’s porch when the house takes flight and finds himself on the true outdoor adventure he’s been dreaming about.
Kevin from 'UP' The Video Game Kevin
Named “Kevin” by Russell, this extremely rare, 13-foot-tall flightless bird is hidden from the world in its remote Paradise Falls habitat. Kevin is exceptionally fast and nimble despite its size. In fact, the massive bird often gets into some very curious and seemingly impossible positions. Very few know that this scientifically valuable creature exists, but Carl and Russell stumble upon the bird, which Russell names Kevin after he discovers they share a sweet tooth. Kevin and Russell bond instantly, and despite the bird’s propensity to swallow Carl’s walker, Kevin joins the jungle’s most unlikely pack, along with Carl, Russell and Dug.
Dug from 'UP' The Video Game Dug
Dug is a lovable golden mutt living in the wilds of Paradise Falls as part of the dog pack searching for the rare, flightless bird. Like the rest of his pack, Dug is outfitted with a remarkable high-tech collar that translates his thoughts into speech. But Dug is mocked as the nerd of the pack. Sent into the jungle on a “special” mission, Dug accidentally succeeds when he discovers the bird following Carl and Russell. As they’re pursued through the jungle by his own pack, the sweet, but simple-minded Dug must decide to which pack he actually belongs.

Game Modes
Up the Video Game features loads of game modes that ensure that players’ Amazonian adventure keeps going and going. Just a few of these include: House jumping levels, Rafting levels.

Video Game Spaces: Image, Play, and Structure in 3D Worlds

Review

Video Game Spaces takes readers on a fantastic journey that resonates with what we love best about games—their double identity as places to both ponder and play. Richly researched and well-written (Nitsche is a master of example), the book delves deeply into the interdisciplinary nature of Game Studies, offering key insights along the way.”
Katie Salen, co-author of Rules of Play and editor of The Ecology of Games

“After reading Nitsche’s superbly informed and wide-ranging analyses of the multiple factors that shape our experience of game worlds, and his typology of the spatial architectures that underlie the player’s possibilities of action, it will no longer be possible to take the visual resources of games, their relation to film, and the strategic configuration of their world for granted.”
Marie-Laure Ryan,, University of Colorado, Boulder

“An important journey into video game spaces.”
Jesper Juul, Researcher, Singapore-MIT Game Lab, and author of Half-Real

Product Description

The move to 3D graphics represents a dramatic artistic and technical development in the history of video games that suggests an overall transformation of games as media. The experience of space has become a key element of how we understand games and how we play them. In Video Game Spaces, Michael Nitsche investigates what this shift means for video game design and analysis.

Navigable 3D spaces allow us to crawl, jump, fly, or even teleport through fictional worlds that come to life in our imagination. We encounter these spaces through a combination of perception and interaction. Drawing on concepts from literary studies, architecture, and cinema, Nitsche argues that game spaces can evoke narratives because the player is interpreting them in order to engage with them. Consequently, Nitsche approaches game spaces not as pure visual spectacles but as meaningful virtual locations. His argument investigates what structures are at work in these locations, proceeds to an in-depth analysis of the audiovisual presentation of game worlds, and ultimately explores how we use and comprehend their functionality.

Nitsche introduces five analytical layers—rule-based space, mediated space, fictional space, play space, and social space—and uses them in the analyses of games that range from early classics to recent titles. He revisits current topics in game research, including narrative, rules, and play, from this new perspective.

Video Game Spaces provides a range of necessary arguments and tools for media scholars, designers, and game researchers with an interest in 3D game worlds and the new challenges they pose.
